![]() It’s been a struggle on both sides of the ball this season for CMU, and a tough runner like La’Damian Webb (four touchdowns already, eight yards a carry) will certainly not be easy for the Chippewas defense. But the Chippewas have now lost both their FBS games by 24 points with a loss to Michigan State in the opener, and needed a game-winning field goal to beat FCS New Hampshire after blowing a 14-point fourth quarter lead and surrendering 42 points. The game was closer than that final score would indicate, that should be noted. Now, they could return home and wait for Central Michigan, coming off a 41-17 loss to Notre Dame. The Jags, after losing their opener to Tulane, rebounded with a win over Southeast Louisiana and then absolutely rolled through Oklahoma State last week on the road, winning 33-7 as a touchdown underdog. The South Alabama Jaguars (2-1, 1-2 ATS) welcome the Chippewas (1-2, 1-2 ATS) to town, and I like South Alabama to ride a serious momentum wave to a comfortable win here. I don’t think South Florida will be able to keep up, and I think the Owls will pull out another cover this week. It’s not been the expected career for the former five-star recruit, but Daniels has thrown eight touchdowns, seven of them in the wins over Houston and Texas Southern. ![]() Daniels, you may recall, started his career at USC and has made stops at Georgia and West Virginia before ending up at Rice. The Owls have another familiar name at quarterback in JT Daniels. What intrigues me about this team is the infusion of genuine Power 5 talent into the mix - wide receiver Luke McCaffrey, son of Ed and brother of Christian, transferred in from Nebraska and already has four touchdowns this year. Rice has won at Houston, they beat up on Texas Southern and their only loss was at Texas, an understandable one (Rice did cover that spread). It feels almost disrespectful to bet against a team as a home underdog a week after taking one of college football’s powerhouses to the brink, but I’m going to do it. The Owls (2-1, 3-0 against the spread) head to South Florida, where USF is coming off a bizarrely close game with mighty Alabama. There are six ranked games on the schedule this week, Saturday should be a great day of football, so naturally I’m looking at Rice. I think this is the week for that, but if you’re reading this column the past couple weeks and thinking, “Man, this guy stinks - I should pick against him,” I won’t be mad. I can’t win ’em all, but I’d sure like to try winning maybe once or twice. We head out onto the battlefield and go to war, each and every Saturday and Sunday (and Thursday, and sometimes Friday and Monday, and later in the year Tuesday and Wednesday could be added). To boot, through the first two weeks of the NFL season my picks in this column (or in our videos), I am 0-5.īetting on sports is a battle. West Virginia won in the Backyard Brawl to keep me from going totally winless, but it was another losing week overall. They’re on probation from my picks for a little while until I believe they’ve demonstrated value. I went 1-2 again last week: Kansas State lost outright as 6.5-point favorites and the Bengals just flat out stink. I am dangerously approaching fade territory, folks. ![]() Tired of ads? ![]() Hafen was then sold, leaving family hands for the first time in more than one hundred years. In 1960 Horace’s son Douglas was made manager, and he and Ethel operated the business until July 1, 1986. The Merc was known to sell dishes, appliances, horseshoes, nails, dresses, shoes, fabric, toys, and the town’s first television. Horace and Ethel expanded the store and its merchandise. The majority of Adolph’s business was run on credit, and this tradition became a way of life when dealing with McArthur’s Santa Clara Merc. They moved home from California and took over operations on September 1, 1945. The store was sold to Adolph’s daughter Ethel and husband Horace McArthur. In the late 1930s merchandise became extremely difficult to buy, and the inventory dwindled to almost nothing. The new store was named the Santa Clara Coop and was still owned by the Hafens. The garage was rented to the Stucki & Wittwer Produce Company, and gas pumps were installed outside the store. It was a much larger store and also had space for a large garage. In 1928 a new modern building of concrete brick and adobe was constructed one block west of the original site. It was the only mercantile ever established in Santa Clara. It continued to be a general store, handling all varieties of goods needed by a community. The business remained at this location even though grandpa retired in 1917 and sold the business to his son Adolph and two grandchildren. The store was a small room in their home, but the business continued to increase, so in 1900 a small brick building was erected adjoining their house. His work took him from home so much that the work in the store was done largely by grandmother. The building’s design is simple, reflecting the austere modern influence of the times with little architectural ornamentation, but the operation of the business wove a rich legacy. Morphing from a one-room operation to a small, free-standing unit to a thriving mercantile that supplied needed essentials to residents and jobs for many of its youth, the Merc was the heart of Santa Clara. Right from the beginning, the Santa Clara Merc developed a presence on the main street of this small western town. ![]() Nox Android emulator requires a system with at least 8GB of RAM and an i3 CPU or higher, and a minimum of 2GB graphics card to install and run without any problems. To run the emulator, your system graphics must be updated to the latest version. The Android emulator is version 7.1 and you can enable ROOT on it.We are introducing the latest version of Nox App Player software today on Usroid at the request of dear friendsand have provided it for download, which can be installed and run on all windows! If a park ranger suggests staying away from certain canyons, heed the advice. When picking up canyoneering permits, ask about the weather. Flash flood alerts, which are issued by the National Weather Service, prompt the closure of The Narrows and other potentially dangerous trails.Ĭanyoneers, who seek out narrow canyons, face the greatest danger from flash floods. Zion posts weather forecasts at all park entrances and visitor centers, and flash flood alerts are posted on Twitter. The best way to avoid flash floods is to stay away from narrow canyons when the forecast calls for rain. Squeezing into a crack or crevice along a rock wall is another last-ditch option. If there is no high ground, seek shelter behind a large rock that can break the wall of oncoming water. Even if you are only a few feet above the water, those few feet can save your life. It is not possible to outrun or outswim a flash flood. If you find yourself in the path of a flash flood, climb as high as you can as quickly as possible. The wall of water often moves so fast that it compresses the air in front, sending pebbles and small rocks flying through the air. If a thunderstorm several miles distant dumps rain over a canyon’s headwaters, a flash flood can roar downstream, catching unsuspecting hikers and canyoneers by surprise. Perhaps most frightening, flash floods can happen when skies are sunny and clear overhead. Runoff channels into narrow side canyons, forming flash floods that can reach speeds topping 23 feet per second, ripping out trees and vegetation and tumbling boulders like ice cubes. Storms can dump several inches of rain in just a few hours, and the rocky, sun-baked landscape does little to absorb the water or slow it down. There are parts where that moulding is very close to the doors, and there are parts where there is a. Then we added a 3/4" cove moulding (I think) on top that goes to the ceiling. What we ended up using was a flat piece of wood on top of the cabinets, flush with doors. We did DIY and dealt with an uneven ceiling. We used 40" cabinets and had a very hard time dealing with them, so I'm not really seeing how the math works for you to use even a 1.75" crown. You need to find the lowest point on the ceiling & set the uppers at that lowest point. ![]() You will need to do this for the entire wall(s) of cabinets. If the mark on the wall is higher than the ceiling at the 31" mark, your door will bind on the ceiling & therefore the cabinets need to be lowered more. In other words, say a 36" wide cabinet = 13" deep + 18" for a door = 31" deep from the wall. Use a level equal to the depth of the upper cabinets & the depth of the widest door when open. Stretch a level out from the wall forward from that mark. To do this, mark the top of where the cabinets will land on the wall. But first, you need to determine if the doors will open if you go tight to the ceiling. Either live with the gaps or fill them in. Unfortunately, you don't have a lot of choices. Not an easy task, even for a professional. This filler can be scribed to fit the contours of the ceiling after the cabinets are installed. When going tight to the ceiling, typically I'll plan on using a 5/8" to 1" filler strip to go between the top of the cabinets & the ceiling. Basically, you need to find out how the ceiling flows out front of the cabinets as you have along the length of the wall. The other problem that may not have shown yet is that if you go tight to the ceiling, & the ceiling droops past the front of the cabinets, your doors will bind on the ceiling as you open them. However, do keep in mind that the 18" is typically a building code requirement within 18" of either side of the range. Reducing that height is an option, given your situation. That's not including any light valance/rail or top moulding. If you do the math, your 42" uppers, tight to the ceiling, are at the exact height of 18" off the countertop. This has been a learning experience for sure. I guess we were just so excited to have a new kitchen that we overlooked a lot of important details. I know that we should have planned better. I don’t know if that would look really odd, or if it wouldn’t be that noticeable since it’s at the end. Unfortunately, if we lowered the cabinets to add some type of molding, there is no way that it could be installed above this cabinet. It’s at the back left of our kitchen, so it’s not as noticeable. We were lucky that it fit correctly, and we were able to slide it right into place. My concern with adding molding is that we have a floor to ceiling pantry cabinet. It doesn’t seem like this would work well. The other option would be no molding and trying to somehow conceal the open gap. I’m assuming that I could also use a thin scribe molding to cover the gap, but I don’t know if that would look too modern. Although without using some type of riser piece, it doesn’t seem like that would fix the issue. I know that they make a 1.75” crown, which would shorten our backsplash to around 16”. We have a more traditional kitchen (antique white cabinets). Unfortunately, I don't know how much to lower them or what type of molding to consider. There are a couple spots that would have a 1/4” gap.Īre there any good ways to handle this? I was thinking that one option would be to bring the cabinets down a certain distance from the ceiling, so that I could install some type of molding. Our main wall where the stove is located is much better. This means that the first cabinet would sit flush and then you would gradually see a space. On one of the walls, a 1/2" gap opens as you move to the right. The issue is that our ceilings are not level. We didn’t think this through carefully enough, and now we’re just trying to get this to work as best as possible. If I could do this all over again, it would have been easier to use 36”/39”. We had wanted to maximize storage space and went with 42" cabinets. ![]() We are doing everything ourselves except for the countertops. ![]() We are in the process of renovating our kitchen. After all, Italy does their job for them. Today, foreign directors still flutter like moths towards Italy’s rose-coloured Mediterranean light and sublime sets, from the volcanic beaches of the Sicilian Islands to the exotic silhouette of Venice’s Basilica di San Marco. Cinema, from then onwards, framed a society both stagnant and changing. A new brand of Italian comedies depicted marriage, divorce and even the afterlife all’Italiana – in inimitable style. But these only made for a more creatively fecund land.īy the early 1960s, the world was in the feverish grip of acute Italophilia. The new Italy burned with social and moral contradictions: Pucci and the Virgin Mary, Catholicism and the LSD-popping avant-garde, a promised erotic release and Vatican censorship. Meanwhile, the burgeoning paparazzi, a term coined in Mr Fellini’s satire La Dolce Vita, disseminated the pictures. Not only that, but they also reared their own sensual native muses (Mr Marcello Mastroianni, Mr Vittorio Gassman, Ms Sophia Loren, Ms Claudia Cardinale, Ms Gina Lollobrigida) and spawned idiosyncratic prodigies in Messrs Michelangelo Antonioni and Federico Fellini. Messrs Roberto Rossellini, Luchino Visconti and Vittorio De Sica, the pioneers of neorealism, mingled with the Valentino-clad Hollywood starlets of Roman Holiday, Quo Vadis, Ben-Hur and Cleopatra, and it was all filmed at the Cinecittà’s production facilities. Rome was once more the centre of the civilised world. ![]() But by the late 1950s, everyone else on the planet wanted to be made (and passionately kissed) in Italy. ![]() After the war, Italians craved the new American lifestyle, later encapsulated by Mr Renato Carosone’s song “Tu Vuó Fa’ l’Americano”. And with those came the igniting of the neorealist movement fostered by Mr Benito Mussolini’s Roman studio city, Cinecittà. In the 1950s, fuelled by the postwar “economic miracle”, a second Italian Renaissance exploded in automotive, interior and fashion design and, above all, cinema. From Roman holidays to capers on the Amalfi Coast, introducing the movies that made the country a star. ![]() An air fryer is basically a small countertop convection oven.
